Homework Expectations

The purpose for homework in this class is not to give students “busy work”, but rather to reinforce skills that are learned.

Daily assignments will be recorded in a student planner every Monday.  They are always listed on the “Tracker” board at the front of the classroom. Long term assignments, such as book reports or other projects, will be recorded here as well.  Additional homework will only be assigned if a child does not complete class work.  Please check and sign your child’s planner every Monday to ensure that you are aware of your child’s assignments for the week.

A typical week from the students’ planner is as follows:

Mon:      Spelling page, Math Page, Book club

Tues:     Spelling page, Math Page, Book club

Wed:      Spelling, Math page, Book club item due

Thurs:    Spelling test, Math  page, review DOL

Fri:         Math test, DOL test, Open book reading test

                 (reading tests will vary)

**There will occasionally be History and Science tests (will be notified at least a week in advance), as well as long term projects.

Daily assignments are due upon entering class each morning, Tuesday through Friday.  Long term assignments are due the morning of the date due.  If for some reason a child was unable to complete the homework, they may come in before class starts to finish it or get assistance without any penalties.  If this is not possible, please write me a note informing me as to why it is not complete.  Students without a note of explanation, will not receive credit for their homework that night.  I will keep track of missing assignments and once a student is missing five assignments, a note goes home and students may be put on a homework contract or given detention so that they can finish incomplete homework.

Homework will be given a grade based on effort (+, ü+, ü,ü-, -).  I will keep track of students’ effort scores for each trimester and it will be worth 10% of their overall grade.

According to district standards, homework should not exceed an hour each night. Generally, students only end up with approximately a half an hour of homework each night.  However, if a child does not complete class work, this will add to their homework time and it can become overwhelming.

You can help your child develop strong homework habits by enforcing a regular homework time and by providing a quiet study place with all necessary supplies.
